Lucía Bustamante is a multidisciplinary designer based out of Uruguay’s capital Montevideo. She started working as a designer in 2005 and six years ago is when she started working full-time as a Digital Product Designer. Lucía is also helping the Montevideo design community grow as she’s started hosting a few Dribbble Meetups in her city this year! She’s a firm believer that organization is fundamental, not only in your work but also in your life. Keep reading to learn about how she implements this idea in her day-to-day.
Where do you work? Tell us about your space.
I currently work as Senior Designer for a UK company in a very nice office located in one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Montevideo, Punta Carretas. I do Graphic Design and UX work and I can say that I’m most organized inside the screen than at my desk. I try hard to be more organized with my stuff!
I also work as a freelancer building my own products and I have a little sanctuary in my home where I work with my boyfriend who works from home drawing comics. My office is like a museum of action figures from comics, video games, and art books. I’m also a fan of mugs and notebooks because I drink a lot of tea and I take many notes. Eventually, I would like to live the experience of working nomadically sometime in my life.
What hardware and software do you use to create your designs?
At the office, I work with a 15’’ MacBook Pro, a 27’’ monitor and many tablets. At home, I use a Mac Mini and a 27’’ monitor. The software I use is mostly Sketch, but also Photoshop, Illustrator, InVision, and team tools like Slack, Trello, and JIRA. I’m quite addicted to Spotify as well—working without music is painful!
Tell us about your routine (or lack of one.) How do you structure your days to get things done?
From Monday through Friday, I start working at the office at 8:30 am and leave at 4:30 pm. When I get home I continue working on my freelance projects, or I play video games. On Tuesdays, I have yoga classes after work that I highly recommend—especially when you are a workaholic! I try not to work on weekends so I can use that time to go outside and see my family.

How do your space, tools, and habits benefit you? What about those things do you think needs improvement?
Creating a workspace is very important, especially for those who work in creative fields. It’s vital to work in a comfortable space surrounded by elements that inspire us and make us happy. In my case, I try to create and improve my space in order to work in an environment that is a pleasure to be in and spend many hours a day.
