Chloe Jackson's fun and colorful workspace

Chloe Jackson is a Bristol based motion designer and illustrator with a love for vivid colors and bold shapes. You can see this reflected through her design work as well as the decor in her home office. Read further to learn more about Chloe’s space and what freelance life is like her!

Where do you work? Tell us about your space.

I live in a leafy part of Bristol, UK, and work from my home studio. It’s a bright and airy space full of artwork, books, and trinkets that I’ve collected from my travels. I have a lot of plants and love looking after them as it gets me away from my computer. There’s also a park close by so I always hear the birds first thing in the morning. It’s a nice way to start the day.

What hardware and software do you use to create your designs?

I work on a 27” iMac and I mainly use Adobe Illustrator and After Effects. I also have a Wacom Intuos Pro tablet which I use from time to time.

Another shot from a recently finished project. I was kindly asked by the talented Tom Rosenthal to create an animated music video for him. You can check it out here here. You can also find more of Tom's wonderful work here. Enjoy!

Tell us about your routine (or lack of one.) How do you structure your days to get things done?

I feel very lucky that my routine can be so flexible. I’ve worked in agencies before and the one thing that I really struggled with was the routine. Working as a freelancer allows me to work when it’s best for me. If I’m not feeling productive, I go for a run or a bike ride in the woods and clear my head. There’s no point wasting time staring blankly at your screen.

The downside of working like this is that when I do work, I can get very carried away. A big project can sometimes result in bouts of insomnia and I may find myself at my desk from 4 am until the evening. This can really throw my work life balance out of whack and is something I’m trying to change. The one thing that is consistent, however, is that my day always starts with coffee!

How do your space, tools, and habits benefit you? What about those things do you think needs improvement?

The peace and quiet of my studio allows me to think clearly. Free from distractions, I can really concentrate on my projects. Working this way makes me really happy which in turn has a very positive effect on my projects. Over the past year of being a freelancer, I have produced some of my best work and I’m sure it’s due to the freedom of working the way which is best for me.
