Who are you?
I’m Jony, an independent designer and brand strategist based in New York City. I’m focused on logos, brand strategy, and design. I’m a big lover of minimalism.
You will always find me walking on the streets of New York, especially at night, wearing black clothing. Yes, I love black, and like Wednesday Adams used to say, “I’ll stop wearing black when they make a darker color.” Since black is all colors together, it isn’t a negation of color but a full acceptance of it. Black is my style, black is poetic, it never goes out of style, and it will always be sophisticated.
Outside of the design world, I love photography. For me, everything started with the word “freedom.” No phone, no pool, no pets, no cigarettes. I’ve been after ultimate freedom. To no longer to be poisoned by civilization. I fly and walk alone upon the land and try to get lost. My photography gives me that freedom: it’s just me and the lens.
Late at night, I always listen to AudioBooks. I don’t like to read books, it takes me years to finish a book. Listening to a book allows me to finish it in one or two days.
What are you working on?
I’m always working on something, but unfortunately, I cannot mention what I am working on right now because of an NDA. Personal projects? I’m working on a set of posters, the first of which is currently being printed. I’m also working on a book, which is going to take a little bit longer to see the light, but it’s getting there. Stay tuned!
Choose a favorite shot of yours. Why is it a favorite?
This project has an awesome story behind it. The client for this project contacted me asking for a quote on my services and once I sent the quote, the client answered back that it was too expensive.
I said to the client that I perfectly understood the situation and that I would be available whenever needed. Three months later of this first contact, the client came back to me asking me to work on the project because a “cheap $5 service” had been used and it was a total disaster.
I turned the project into a total success, the client fell in love with both the solution and the design process because I did not offer the usual rocket as a logo for the business.
The lesson? Never underprice your service, never give up and do it cheap, and of course, buy that Pro membership on Dribbble because of course I got this client through Dribbble.
Tell us about your setup. What tools did you use to create the shot (e.g. hardware, software, pens, paper, blowtorch)?
I’m trying to be as portable as possible, I always use a Macbook Pro as Computer, I’m even thinking about switching to an iPad Pro and drop the laptop. I also use the usual pencil and paper for quick sketching, then go straight into Illustrator. I use an iPhone for taking pictures, even when I own a pro DSLR, because again, I’m trying to be as portable as possible. You can always see more of my setup by visiting my Instagram account.
Choose a favorite shot from another Player. Why do you dig it?
I love this shot, more specifically this logo, by Mackey Saturday. I think there’s a tendency in the logo design world to just translate words into a design. A client might come with a “Moon Cheese” business name, and the designer creates a logo that’s just a moon with a cheese texture. I really hate that and have never understood it. It seems to me that can be done by anybody, and there’s no creativity or research behind it.
If you check the entire Oculus project, you will be able to see a remarkable research behind that beautiful logo. I love this shot. That is the kind of perfection I want to accomplish in my work.
