Who are you?
My name is Josh Schielie, I’m a designer, illustrator, and sports fanatic. I reside in an itty-bitty city by the bay, we call it The City, but you probably know it as San Francisco. When I started school I was interested in product development, but after a year and half of that and a six-hour sewing lab, I switched my major to graphic design. Best decision ever. Follow your gut!
During the day I’m a senior designer for an apparel company that focuses on licensed loungewear. When I’m not working, I’m drawing things for myself and making things like prints, pins, and patches. You can mostly find me listening to bay area sports talk radio, drinking micheladas, buying shoes, or hanging out with my cat.
What are you working on?
Man, I’m working on a lot! I need to work to keep my motor going. Shout out to my dad for giving me that quality. Right now, I’m trying to wrap up my Topps cards project. I’ve purchased a 24 card count case, and illustrated my favorite sports icons on each individual card. I’m pretty stoked about this and how it’s all coming together! It feels good to have work out in the wild, not just on the interwebs. There’s something really rad about creating something digitally and then having a tangible item evolve from it.
Choose a favorite shot of yours. Why is it a favorite?
This shot is, believe it or not, my most proud illustration piece to date! Aside from sports, music is another thing that keeps me going. This piece Features Eazy-E, Nate Dogg, Snoop Dogg, Tupac, and two alley cats doing alley cat things. Shout out to west coast rap. I chose to focus on this piece because I think it displays my style best. I believe in having fun (important!) with my design work, and I’m always trying to show little details that the normal eye might not catch on the first look.
Tell us about your setup. What tools did you use to create the shot (e.g. hardware, software, pens, paper, blowtorch)?
This is my batter’s box. My home plate, a place of determination, but also a place of uncertainty. I always try to remember to be thankful for the skills I have, but I also remind myself that I must keep working at my craft every day to improve. It’s important to set goals and chip away at them each day. Most all of my work is created with Adobe Illustrator. There are times where I do the sketches with pencil and paper, but mostly only when I’m unsure about the composition. Lastly, and only sometimes, I use Photoshop for applying textures to my works. Again, it’s all in the details man!
Choose a favorite shot from another Player. Why do you dig it?
This isn’t an easy question to ask, I see why you guys saved it for last. I love Dribbble because there’s so much rad stuff posted each day, but I have to chose the work of Barbora Togel. She’s rad! Aside from taking her medium from digital to tattooing, I love how she uses the combination of verbiage and illustration together. I love the wit she portrays, that insider “if you know, you know” kind of knowledge. Simple, but powerful.
