Who are you?

I’m an illustrator and designer in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I work at a local agency doing UI design and front-end development. I have to do illustration in my free time to help balance out the technical-ness of my job, and I just love it. I also paint in my free time with gouache being my medium of choice.

What are you working on?

I just finished up our family Christmas postcard for this year and I’m so happy with how it turned out. I’m also currently working on my first picture book that I’m hoping to self-publish sometime next year. I have it written, so now I just have to get all the illustrations together. I would never have imagined how hard drawing for an entire book would be before I started this journey!

Lastly, I’m always working on a new bird illustration each week as part of my “Birdsday Thursday” personal project I started in May this year.

Choose a favorite shot of yours. Why is it a favorite?

This one is my current favorite because I love how happy we all look and I love the color palette I used. I enjoy the mix of solid and clean shapes with the more textured brush strokes.

Tell us about your setup. What tools did you use to create the shot (e.g. hardware, software, pens, paper, blowtorch)?

I like to do sketches first using blue and red pencils. Then, I’ll take photos of the sketches and take those straight to illustrator. It’s very rare that I don’t sketch first, but Illustrator is my favorite way to lay out shapes and colors. Sometimes I’ll take those vectors to Photoshop and use my Wacom to add textures and brush strokes. I love the gouache brushes from Kyle Webster. I like to make sure my color palette is good first in Illustrator because it makes it easier for me to choose colors when I go to Photoshop.

It’s so hard to pick just one because I have a ton of favorite designers on Dribbble, but I love this one by Andy J. Miller. I’m a huge fan of his illustration style as well as his podcast. I’m a mom, so I know it’s super hard to balance a creative career and motherhood. This shot has always spoken to me for that reason. He did an illustration based on this one that he put on a pocket sketchbook, and I had to buy it when I saw it. It says, “Creativity is like breastfeeding; the more you pump the more it flows.”
