Who are you?
Hello! I’m Andrew Austin and I live in Denver, CO with my wife & two daughters. Like 75% of Denverites, we’re transplants, but have been here about 6 years and love it. I’m almost always down for a board game and love a good type specimen.
What are you working on?
Work-wise I help build the product on the Crew team of Dribbble which translates day-to-day into an assortment of organization, administration, design, and front-end development. We’re currently in the middle of a longer-term project of unifying the flow, design, and codebases for the various Crew properties (our app, internal admin, marketing, blog, etc).
Choose a favorite shot of yours. Why is it a favorite?
Gotta go with the birth announcement for my second daughter, Ada. This was my first opportunity to use Line, one of my favorites scripts by Letters from Sweden, and my daughter’s in the shot, so that seals the deal.
Tell us about your setup. What tools did you use to create the shot (e.g. hardware, software, pens, paper, blowtorch)?
I have a pretty standard setup, with a MacBook Pro & Cinema Display, but I move around a lot and do the bulk of my work directly on the laptop. I work from home, typically in my basement, and love the flexibility that affords.
I tend to start a design with lots of notes (hat tip iA Writer for digital and Baron Fig for notebooks and pens). From there, I’ll move into Sketch and code.
Choose a favorite shot from another Player. Why do you dig it?
This is such a hard question! There’s so many great things to choose from, but I wanted to pick one that spoke to my interests of typography & film.
This shot by Rumsey Taylor is perfect for that! Besides having a great aesthetic, lovely typography, understated animations, and of course movie monsters, I really value the concept of shots-as-a-tease. Without tipping his hand entirely, I have a great idea of what he’s up to here and I’m so interested to see more. It also makes my heart happy that he tagged his typefaces.
