Who are you?
I’m Jonathan Schubert—a graphic designer and illustrator from Dallas, Texas.
After studying design at the University of North Texas from 2006 to 2010 I spent my first 4 to 5 years working on the brand team at Fossil. In that time I learned a lot from talented designers such as Dustin Wallace, Aaron Eiland, and Brent Couchman (to name just a few - everyone from that team is talented). During this time I also had the opportunity to take on various outside projects, freelance, and personal work—all of which has been crucial to my interest and activity as a designer.
For the last year I have been working with another talented group of people in Dallas at Tractorbeam. The work we do is a stark contrast to that which I grew accustomed to at Fossil, and in my own work. It’s been both refreshing and a challenge to learn to think in new ways about design. The talent and experience at Tractorbeam is truly unique to Dallas and I’m excited to be working with so many awesome people there. Check out some of our work at tractorbeam.com!
What are you working on?
Tractorbeam work is top secret - we don’t talk about that - but in terms of freelance and outside projects I’m currently working on some illustrations for Outside Magazine, a set of tees for a magic shop in Chicago, some new packaging for a men’s product brand I helped develop a year or so ago, and various assets for an outdoor lifestyle brand in the making. Oh, and I’m always trying to make time for personal work - so we’ll see. Wish I didn’t ever have to sleep, that would be great for productivity.
Choose a favorite shot of yours. Why is it a favorite?
My favorite recent shot from my Dribbble is probably this one. Just a lot of fun to work on and we’re almost done finessing these. Can’t wait to see how they turn out!
Tell us about your setup. What tools did you use to create the shot (e.g. hardware, software, pens, paper, blowtorch)?
Half of the time I’m doing things by hand - drawing with pens, pencils, etc. The other half of the time I’m in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for various filtering explorations. That said, I most enjoy doing illustrations and type by hand when I can - just feels like me.
Choose a favorite shot from another Player. Why do you dig it?
This one comes from a talented colleague who sits just 10 feet away from my terrible jokes every day…
I really dig this type piece by Chase Kahn for a few reasons. First, the attention to detail - all the perfect imperfections - is on point for the period from which it’s inspired. I saw the projector still that inspired this and it’s a really nice transition. Moreover, knowing the designer - it’s just great to see people making things out of pure interest and exploration. This guy is really interested in film and I think it shows in the simplest details here—which reminds me of what it means to be excited about design.
