Who are you?
I am a 30-something-Nashville-based-illustrator-and-designer, originally hailing from the great state of Kentucky. I have been in the biz over ten years now, but these days my work is split pretty evenly between doing illustration projects through my agent extraordinaire (Jennifer Vaughn), and picking up design projects locally. I am a crazed animal lover, so I like to incorporate furry and feathered beasties where I can (often unnecessarily). I like bright colors, tiny details, and stupid amounts of pattern and texture. I always admire those artists who can get to their point simply and elegantly, as this is not a language I speak.
What are you working on?
I am working on a wine label (which has always been a bucket list job for me) and am about to start another Nashville-centric image for a local puzzle company. I told the client (half-jokingly) that if I have to draw another cowboy boot I am relocating immediately.
Choose a favorite shot of yours. Why is it a favorite?
This one is brand new and I am always most partial to my work when it is fresh. It is also full of line and pattern, which I have been having a lot of fun with lately. Also… limited color palettes are my jam!
Tell us about your setup. What tools did you use to create the shot (e.g. hardware, software, pens, paper, blowtorch)?
It is just me and my giant iMac, huddled together in my tiny home office. I am often covered in a blanket (because I am cold all the time like an elderly woman) and yelling at my gassy boxer for filling the office with his distinct aroma. I would like to say that I am constantly doodling away in my sketchbook before I begin work in Illustrator, but I really only do sketches when clients require them. This is something I need to change ASAP, as I have noticed my old-fashioned drawing and painting skills slipping over time.
Choose a favorite shot from another Player. Why do you dig it?
Jeannie Phan has such a distinct and smart style. I really admire her thoughtful approach and unusual compositions. This shot in particular just reinforces to me how powerful and compelling visual communication can be.
