Who are you?
I’m Leandro Assis, a letterer and designer from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Currently, I’m keeping things rad with my buddy Romulo Pinheiro at Relâmpago. We focus on everything in the realm of typography and illustration, as well as on creating cool products and self-initiated projects.
When I’m not working, I’m most likely listening to good music, watching m.A.A.d. movies and creating stuff for fun.
What are you working on?
Letterad is my constant guilty pleasure. It’s a personal project I started working on in the beginning of the year. Every week (I can), I post 6 new letterings on Dribbble and Instagram, linked by a different theme. I’ve done Brazilian slangs, the most popular memes in Brazil, and my favourite GIRLS characters. Most posts are in Brazilian Portuguese and it’s awesome because I’m pretty sure most Players who like my posts on Dribbble don’t use google translate.
At Relâmpago, we’re working on a promotional video, that I’m super proud of, for the launch of our website. Lots of illustration, animation and type. Huge spoiler alert: Beyoncé’s going to be in there.
Choose a favorite shot of yours. Why is it a favorite?
I really really really love the composition and the colors. Everything. Also, it’s the first of the Letterad series and very important to me as designer because since making this lettering I fully embraced my ability to manage this large number of points on my vector files. I really like them. I’m not trying to be perfect, i’m all about imperfections. In the beginning I felt too restrained by people’s definition of what’s a good lettering. I’m ignoring judgment for now and feeling goood about my imperfect curves.
Tell us about your setup. What tools did you use to create the shot (e.g. hardware, software, pens, paper, blowtorch)?
My secret weapons are basically random papers, ‘cause I h-a-t-e Moleskines. Tombow pens. Scanner. Glyphs. Illustrator and a good playlist full of jams on Spotify to give me power to battle my béziers.
Choose a favorite shot from another Player. Why do you dig it?
This is really hard. I’m a huge Dribbble fan and there are so many talented designers here. But OK, i’m going with J.T. Edmondson. That’s the man! He is such an inspiration to me as a type designer. Proving that type can be playful and far far away from boredom. That shot in particular shows that.
It’s a dream of mine to get to that level of chill someday. Hopefully I’m meeting him someday and telling him that in person. I’m planning a trip to SF next year, so, who knows?
