Who are you?

I’m Dave Chenell, general computer artist currently living in NYC. I grew up about an hour north from here in CT. I’ve been making things with computers ever since I was a kid. I absolutely love building things with computers, development, design, motion, storytelling and everything in between.

What are you working on?

Currently I’m probably working on way too many things. Right now I’m independent, working with a futurism media startup in Seattle called Scout, building their site and doing editorial illustrations. I also just wrapped up a project with Google and am always working with a few different app / game companies doing art direction and illustration work on an ongoing basis. I love the variety of being an independent contractor. I also have a few personal projects and game I am working on in my spare time.

Choose a favorite shot of yours. Why is it a favorite?

I think this one would have to be my favorite. It’s from a short film that has been slowly coming together in my mind for quite some time. Sometimes I have ideas for shots and try them out in GIF format to see if they have the impact I imagine. The slow timing here and explosion delay really worked out to give the shot a sense of immense scale.

Tell us about your setup. What tools did you use to create the shot (e.g. hardware, software, pens, paper, blowtorch)?

This shot above was made entirely in Adobe After Affects. It used a few plugins as well as bunch of adjustment layers to get the final look just right. Really its just layers, distortion, particles to create everything in that shot.

Choose a favorite shot from another Player. Why do you dig it?

Oh man, this is such a hard question. Recently I’ve been very into the work of Vacaliebres. I love the power in his little marks. They are so simple yet make me feel so many things. That is a trait I find super inspiring.
