The UX Files: Saltwater Tank App

MISSION: Saltwater Tank App

Maintaining a healthy saltwater fish tank requires hobbyists to monitor several aspects of the aquarium environment. Create an engaging, customizable, playful app that makes it easier to monitor multiple tanks.

UX AGENT: Anke Mackenthun

Anke Mackenthun is the creative lead on all website, identity, and user interface design projects at Spongeworks LLC, a Los Angeles-based design studio. She has a degree in graphic and web design from AEP, Hamburg, Germany, and over 15 years of design experience.

When she’s not glued to the computer screen, Anke likes to take her dogs out for a stroll in sunny Hollywood or enjoy a nice cold beer in a neighborhood “Biergarten” (she’s German after all).

TOOLS:

Photoshop and Balsamiq

CHALLENGE: Tank Maintenance = Complicated + Tedious

There are a number of factors that can lead to a healthy (or unhealthy) tank environment, depending on aquarium configuration and inhabitants. Tracking these changes in the water can be tedious. Anke and team turned the experience around by designing the app to be playful and fun, despite its heavy use of data and graphing.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Customizable Interface: The user can heavily customize the interface with colors and card configuration. Anke took inspiration from playing cards to further the playfulness concept. The data “cards” can be shuffled, rearranged, and flipped to reveal more detailed information.

Multiple Aquariums: The Saltwater Tank app is able to track multiple aquarium environments, each with their own customization options.
