Timeout: Joseph Alessio

Joseph Alessio I play 7 instruments, am left-handed and once miserably failed to raise a bonsai tree. Incidentally, I also design, illustrate and draw letters.

Who are you?

Hi Dribbblers! I’m Joseph Alessio, a typographic illustrator, designer, image maker and stop-motion animator. Born and raised near Detroit, I’m now living in Denver. I’ve had the pleasure of working with some great people, including Target, Patagonia and Monotype. When I’m not working, I’m most likely playing music, exploring or doing more work that’s just for fun. Or looking for my pencil sharpener in a jungle of sketch paper, again.

What are you working on?

I have a few exciting things going on currently — some interesting opportunities in the works, some holiday-related work that you’ll probably see next year, and always trying to cook up something fun for a personal project. I’m also, slowly but surely, working on decorating my new apartment.

This piece I did for Circles Conference recently is probably my current favorite shot. I love the way the various nuances are incorporated — the leaves indicative of inspiration, the pastels as a tool of creation, and the circular pattern a reference to both the name of the conference and the cycle of inspiration and creation. The animation worked out really well (despite being quite time-intensive) — it’s fun, colorful, and succinct, making it a really strong piece. The GIF is only part of the animation, however. You can see the entire piece here on Instagram!

Tell us about your setup. What tools do you use in your job? (e.g. hardware, software, pens, paper, blowtorch)?

I started with the usual suspects, sketching it out with pencil and paper. Then I foraged for leaves and pulled out my old pastels to set up the compositions. I photographed the frames with my trusty Canon and animated it in Photoshop.
