Who are you?
My name is Dave Foster, I’m from Sydney, Australia and I draw typefaces and lettering.
What are you working on?
I’m currently freelancing for Commercial Type, Klim Type Foundry and Mark Gowing Design, developing and finalising some typefaces as well as working on my own type for retail release. Complementing this I’m also working directly for a broad spectrum of clients and styles doing lettering and illustration for editorial, branding, publishing and advertising purposes.
Choose a favorite shot.
This is one of my favourite shots purely because it excited me when I was drawing it. Unlike the majority of my other shots, it doesn’t have a commercial context and when I was drawing it, I was concentrating on making the most extreme forms I could, which is always really fun.
Tell us about your setup.
For almost all my lettering and type work I use Robofont, a tool created for type design. I usually sketch by hand first but with this shot I just went straight into it on screen. For my other work, I use inks, pens, pencils, my laser printer, my scanner, watercolours, whatever I can get my hands on or is going to achieve the effect I’m after.

I’m really into this shot by Ken Barber. I love the way the light glows out from the graphite. Not only does it say my favourite two things in the world but it’s just straight up killer. Surprisingly enough, there aren’t many people in the world who are good at both lettering and type design. Although they are related, they are really different. Ken is one of these people, for this I admire his work greatly.
