Threshold Mapping can be a useful tool for understanding how a person's capacity for an action changes with time.

After interviewing over thirty people about moments in their life when they reached out to meet new people, their experienced converged upon a few key moments where they would step outside of their comfort zone to meet new people. People who stayed in one place for a long time were much less likely than those who moved/changed careers to reach out to new people on LinkedIn or Meetup.com. However, one thing which lowered a person's inhibitions in meeting new people was when they both had a friend in common.
