Biography
Mia Buono loves all things analog photography, filmmaking, development, and experimentation. Her recent body of work includes direct animation on 16mm using both hand-recorded and scrap film (Senses - 2023, Ghost - 2023) and still works created without a camera, using the body in place of a lens (Exp. 20 Minutes - 2023). Her most ambitious work of this type to date is FTBP (2023), which she created by hole punching, dyeing, scratching, and collaging 16mm. Mia uses these techniques to explore the mediation technology plays between the body and image in traditional film production, and experiment with the function of the analog film medium itself. She also enjoys creating traditionally shot films on 16mm, like Gender Vol. 1 (2021) which has been exhibited in three shows across Canada . Her latest work-in-progress, Reverend Mother, is her first foray into colour 16mm and her writing debut.
