The "world's most monitored" streets are getting AI-driven CCTV upgrades; will they make Britain safer?

The UK government has announced the doubling of a "Safer Streets" budget to £45 million in response to renewed concerns about the safety of public streets, particularly for women. Additional CCTV is one of the planned initiatives.

The UK, which is frequently referred to as the most watched country on Earth, already has a robust street surveillance ecosystem in place. Since the first wave of security cameras was installed 30 years ago, an estimated 5.9 million devices have been keeping an eye on UK streets. Today, that number is probably much greater, thanks in part to the recent introduction of small cameras like dashcams, bodycams, and doorbell cameras.

However, the overall image of the UK's ecology for street monitoring is unclear.
