Idea behind this is that "%76 complete" doesn't tell a user much – it has to be collated with other information (such as when that process started or for how much it went on). As a remedy, modern web browsers, for example, display various types of data: ratio, time to completion, megabytes downloaded.

This design strives to give user an intuitive feeling an, possibly, propose what she could do instead of staring at the screen.

Gray color scheme and, partially, flat design is to set expectations that user has no control over the process and has to wait.
