Of course not! And it's better to call them unpreferred or unselected, if you asked me, because behind every unpreferred design there is a background of very complex decisions made, that defines one option above the other. 

Especially in long term projects - there are multiple ideations and concept work behind the scenes. Thanks to this type of design approach we can explore, define and test alternative solutions but also study existing ones.
