Searching for Savanna Zine
One of my first-semester grad classes assigned the task of choosing a long form article and creating a zine based off it. After watching the movie Wind River I knew I wanted to pick an article covering the topic of missing and murdered Native American women. After a bit of browsing I found the article Searching for Savanna by Pacific Standard.
I am thankful for publications that will write hard hitting and educational articles like this one.
Written by Mona Gable and originally published by Pacific Standard
Illustrations and layout done by myself, Will Truran
The font and columned layout were meant to symbolize the cold and authoritative nature of the government's role. The illustrations are intended to feel violent as they break through the layout as those raising their voices for the killed and missing.
The illustrations were created to compliment the writing. Each based off a person or event that helped drive the story forward. I created each in an angular style replicating cut paper.
