Lee's BSL Songs - Branding
Lee is a gifted Sign Language Interpreter who had a side-hustle as a sign-singer: he would interpret popular songs into British Sign Language and upload them to YouTube so deaf people could access the latest music. He approached me to brand his venture so he could establish a presence across social media. He's such a great guy, I just wanted to use him. I took photos of him signing, sketched him a few times, and came up with the 'Mini-Lee' concept which we would be able to propagate across all his platforms. The idea was we would be able to dress up the Mini-Lee in different outfits, and make it an evolving thing that people could relate to.
Similarly, for his logo I wanted to use Lee's personality, so I got him to write his name a few times and picked the best one to incorporate, along with the silhouette of the Mini-Lee. I specifically wanted to avoid references to music, partly because music is not so important to deaf people - the signed performance IS the music - but also because Lee wanted to expand beyond 'Lee's BSL Songs' to 'Lee's BSL Stories', 'Lee's BSL Poems' etc.
In the end he didn't go through with the project, but I've always quite liked the work I did on this. This was also one of my first times using the pen tool to draw vector shapes, so that was a massive learning curve! (Pun fully intended.)
