St. Mary is honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as one of the “myrrh-bearing women” and is also known as “apostle to the apostles” and an “equal to the apostles” because of her announcement of the resurrection to the disciples of Jesus.
-
In many Orthodox icons, she is depicted holding a red egg, because of an ancient tradition that holds that she visited the Roman emperor and brought him a red egg as a symbol of Christ’s resurrection, announcing to him, “Christ is Risen!” From this developed the tradition among Orthodox Christians of sharing red eggs with one another on Pascha (Orthodox Easter).
