The average Australian generates 606 kg of waste per year. This is not sustainable. #fuckwaste

A social campaign aimed at young adults within the middle to upper socio-economic classes with heavy appetites for material consumption. This campaign consists of a social media platform and a smartphone application.

WHY WASTE? is designed to educate individuals and raise awareness within the target audience to understand what is defined as waste, its treatment and impacts in landfill.Australia is the world’s second biggest waste contributor. WHY WASTE? aims to encourage individuals to change their lifestyle and minimise environmental damage by reducing the waste they are producing in their households.

*This conceptual project was designed for an undergraduate final year’s research project. All stages of the design process was undertaken by me, including choosing a company name with its vision and mission, research, idea and concept generation, visual identity, copywriting, photography and execution of the chosen design format. The final products are the conceptual designs of a website, mobile app and online advertisements.

Research was commenced during the first semester, from monitoring own waste production, keeping an ethnographic journal, conducting an informal anonymous survey, following bloggers with a zero-waste lifestyle and gathering information on waste production and treatment in Australia. The collated data then informed the decision on the final format and concept.

An online platform was selected as most young adults are digitally active and familiar with that realm. Users are able to track and eventually reduce their waste with ease. As one of the reasons people choose to opt for single-use and disposable products is convenience, the design and function is kept simple yet intuitive to not deter users with busy lives.
