Australia – a lucky country and a land of many. Where did you come from?
A passport-style book wrapped in an interactive travel map as part of International Society of Typographic Designers Project 2015 with a brief relating to the word ‘milestone’. The aim of this project is to allow people to gain a better insight of Australia and ultimately make this country a richer place to live in. The target audience are potential migrants and families with overseas migrants.
The passport sized book collects stories I’ve gathered from individuals whose lives have been impacted by crossing oceans. The map serves as an interactive piece, where the readers are able to pin their journey to Australia with the pins and line of string inside the attached luggage tag.
*This conceptual project was designed for an undergraduate final year’s research project. All stages of this design process was undertaken by me, including choosing the format, choosing the book title, research, idea and concept generation, gathering content, copywriting, photography, and execution of the chosen design format.
Research was commenced during the first semester, from visiting the local immigration museum, developing a research method, conducting thirty interviews and gathering information on the history of Australia as we know it. The collated data then informed the decision on the final format and concept behind this design.
A passport-style book was chosen as it is a small yet significant item needed to enter Australia. It also embodies the multiculturalism of the country. The real-size makes it a novelty that is easily transportable if any of the readers continue to venture the world. The typographic map consists of no imagery, only layers of the diverse stories of people journeying into Australia in words using various colours and saturations.
