Designing for dynamic content is hard - and often the most variable (and engaging) material on the net is News. Designers can rarely rely on consistency in photo quality and composition, headline length, and presence of metadata (author, publish date, etc.).

So many design decisions are frequently based on extensibility, allowing the design to extend to inherently unknown and incomplete content. The above design is influenced by this constraint in several ways: non-gradated overlays accommodates unknown/ill-cropped photos, bolder type for smaller text sizes, and circular photos pair better with text at variable lengths.
