Daily UI #073 - Virtual Reality
Thoughts on Today’s Challenge
I was wondering if/when a VR task would appear on this challenge. Virtual reality is an innovative and explosive market, I am excited to observe the exponential growth in the upcoming years.
I have been thinking about crafting a 3D UIs and the VR/AR design space for a while now. Unfortunately, I don’t fully possess the technical skills to fabricate my ideas, yet. I have been trying to pick up Blender in my free time, and after today’s research, I will add Unity to my to-learn list. I still want to try out Invision Studio too, but that might have to wait.
A great market for VR would be travel and adventure so I went in that direction today. I somewhat recently went on a trip to Barcelona and was able to get a firsthand view of Gaudí’s Sagrada Família. It is such an amazing piece of architecture and there are so many intricate details.
Photos don't do it justice. Virtual reality, however, will.
In the sake of saving me time, I just went with a mock-up of a virtual scene opposed to building one out in Unity or Blender. I did a screengrab of a 3D interactive video on Youtube, then I put that into After Effects and fused around until I had a scene I could work with. So this is more a proof of concept and something to come back to later. Also, properly exporting a 3D video into GIF format for the web proved to be the hardest challenge. In the future I would opt for posting a .mp4 file, assuming I have a PRO account by then.
For the VUI I included 2 buttons, a menu, and points of interest button. Selecting either button would open another 3D interface, a 3D modal? The interface would reduce opacity based on where the user is looking.
Thanks for checking out my post!
