The Plastic is not Fantastic! - ROQUE ID

In the first instance, plastic is affecting global warming, contributing to the increase in the temperature of the ocean surface and the destruction of marine life.

Plastic bottles at sea pollute!
Plastic is one of the most polluting materials for the ocean. It is a material that can take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade. For the first time, a study by the prestigious journal Science quantifies the plastic that reaches the oceans: more than 8 million tons of plastic bottles in the sea every year and it is estimated that in the year 2050 there will be more plastic in the sea than fishes. Can we imagine what 8 million tons of plastic bottles at sea mean each year? This same study shows that more than 80% of the plastic waste that reaches the sea comes from a few countries, with China in the first place and the United States also among the first.

Now, the truth is that scientists still do not know for sure where the vast majority of plastic waste is said to reach the ocean. A large part would be sunk at the bottom of the sea. Another part of the plastics would be floating in the sea, trapped in eddies and ocean turns. At the same time, the marine currents that transport plastics, wind, solar radiation and the action of waves cause plastic bottles in the sea and other waste of this material to crack and break into smaller and smaller fragments, producing what are called microplastics. The amount of microplastics in the ocean is extremely difficult to quantify. They are tiny, very difficult to eliminate and become part of marine trophic networks when ingested by fish. In addition to directly affecting the mortality of marine animals, they can also have harmful effects on the humans who consume them.
