Arabic Calligraphy in the Malay Region

Excerpt from our ‘Arabic Calligraphy Around the World’ calendar. A striking feature of Southeast Asian Qurans is the vivid colour range of red, black and yellow used in illumination adorning a variant of the Naskh script known as jawi. Throughout the archipelago the preferred writing material for Qurans was paper, although in Java the beaten bark of the mulberry tree was often used.
