Paul Newman
Paul Newman.
In my opinion, you really don't get better than Paul Newman. Both as an actor and as a human being. When I first encountered him on screen Paul Newman had been crafting in his profession for over 30 years. After watching The Color of Money I had to go backwards through his movies. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The Verdict. The Hustler. Cool Hand Luke. The list was enormous.
I feel like it would do you a disservice, to try an tell you how good of an actor he was. Lets leave it at this, he is one of five actors in history to be nominated for an academy award in five different decades (nominated 11 times with 2 wins). Thats a man operating at the pinnacle of his skillset, for HALF A CENTURY. Even his last feature film before he died, Road to Perdition with Tom Hanks....Nominated.
As a human being, he was one of a kind. Early on, he was tossed out of college for "unruly behavior". He served three years in the navy in World War II. His second marriage, to Joanne Woodward, lasted until the end of his life, a romance of 50 years. He founded Newman's Own, a line of food products, that as of 2014 has donated 400 MILLION dollars to various charities. In the last year of his life alone, he gave 21 million dollars to charity. One of his passions was auto racing, which he competed (and won) for most of his life. He was the oldest driver to ever be part of a winning race team at age 70 and was still competing well into his eighties. Sadly he passed almost ten years ago to the day(September 28th, 2008). The death of Paul Newman was great loss to film, and an even greater loss to the world.
This portrait was actually the first one that I did for Inktober, and I couldn't quite get it right. Reading about him so much I couldn't bring myself to post it, without figuring it out. Even though its just Inktober,(where mistakes are totally ok) I feel like sometimes you owe it to someone to get it right.
The world owes you debt Mr. Newman. Thank you.
