B12 uses human-assisted AI to deliver services to our customers of small- and medium-sized businesses, including Search Engine Optimization (SEO). As part of our premium SEO service, SEO Pro, we write custom monthly blog posts that incorporate relevant search keywords.

During a recent hackathon, an engineer wanted to build an internal tool to streamline the SEO Pro delivery process — selecting blog post topics, matching these topics with relevant keywords, getting customer approval, and coordinating with copywriters. Although I was working on a different hackathon project, I quickly hand-sketched this rough interface for the engineer. The second image is the resulting interface for the internal-facing tool our team uses today.

Even though the sketches and internal tool are not conventionally beautiful and Dribbble-worthy, I wanted to share an example of how real work sometimes gets done under less-than-ideal circumstances and results in significant improvements to our customers’ and copywriters’ experiences. After this tool went live, the time required to create a six-month content calendar was reduced from ~20 minutes to ~5 minutes.
