Knowing when detail isn't priority

One thing you don't really see in creative advice guides and tutorials from experts is any word on knowing when you can save time and hassle bypassing a minor detail which either won't be visible or won't take away value for instance. Maybe it shows you understand your work and the spectators eye? This is a cliff which'll be almost a silhouette.
