T ~ Tarana Burke

The term “Me Too,” was first used to promote solidarity for survivors of sexual abuse by civil rights activist Tarana Burke in 2006. 10 years later, it became a global phenomenon that raised awareness about sexual harassment, abuse, and assault in society.

Tarana originally coined the phrase while working at Just Be Inc., a nonprofit she founded in 2003 that focused on the overall well-being of young women of color. She was left searching for the right words to help empathize with the countless women and young girls who had disclosed their experiences to her. Ever since, Burke has shared the message with survivors everywhere: “You’re not alone. This happened to me too.”
