WhatsApp Re-design Concept

I’ve always enjoyed the functionality of WhatsApp, but was never satisfied by the UI of the platform. Despite its popularity, WhatsApp’s UI design can be quite dull and confusing. Considering that it’s an essential app used by 1.5 billion people every month, it lacks a clear UX flow and modern design.

My goal for this re-design concept was to condense the UI by removing the tab bar and re-placing those elements on the navigation bar. The objective of this is to make the screen perspective much larger and put a pronounce focus on the more important features.

I decided to build off the current UI without making extravagant changes so users can adapt to this new layout more easily. The final mockups were streamlined to pack more features in an optimized manner by putting emphasis on ‘chat’ and ‘call’, while also letting users know they can share daily moments through the ‘status’ feature in a ‘stories’ format. This updated visual aesthetic gives WhatsApp more of that chat application vibe with a clearer brand identity as being associated with Facebook.
