Unlike many ethical questions in the murky world of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI), the issue of ‘robot rights’ has in fact entered public consciousness and discourse in recent years. In 2017, the EU Parliament approved a resolution that would grant a special ‘electronic personhood’ to particularly advanced robots, just as certain companies or organisations can have a ‘corporate personhood’ meaning that they can enjoy at least some of the rights (and obligations) owned by people.
