I grew up on Long Island and spent plenty of time hanging at the Smithhaven Mall. Our mall was special because soaring above the corridors lined with such fine retailers as Sam Goody and Contempo Casuals were actual mobiles created by Alexander Calder. The food court (Calder Court) contained the piece de resistance, with a cacophony of colorful metal shapes hanging beneath a huge skylight. The happy highways where I went hold memories of Saturday afternoons chowing down on deep fried chicken balls from Manchu Wok and admiring those mobiles. This piece and many others are inspired by that time of wonder.
