Flight

“I tell my employees that we're in the service business, and it's incidental that we fly airplanes.” —Herb Kelleher @southwestair ✈️ We call them the Target Market. Users. Audience. Customers. Clients. Followers. But then when we strip off all these labels, all that’s really left is “People”. I read the above quote a while ago and it reminded me that I’m not here to make logos or draw stuff per se. I’m supposed to be designing to serve people. To make sure the intended message gets to them. To help them distinguish one brand from another. To make a product easier for them to use. To make direction signs easier for them read. To make life easier and better for them. ✈️ Also last night, I was watching an episode in the @netflix series called Abstract and Paula Scher was explaining how the infamous butterfly ballot design managed to overthrow an election. Made me rethink how I value my design practice. If Design is capable of messing things up real bad like that, surely it also have the same kind of power to do the opposite—to do good and improve people’s lives, right? ✈️ So here is today’s note to self: Design not for other designers. Not for awards. Not for brand engagement. Not for follower count. Design is about the people. Design so you can serve them. 😇
