You need something eye-catching and useful for tutorial posts. It also helps to add the origin of the image in a way that can't be cropped out, but also flows with the rest of it.

You never know where your thumbnail images are going to end up, so it pays to include credit info.

Thumbnail design is something I don't see talked about much, and the text in thumbnail images is a very important and underrated real-estate for UX microcopy.
