3D Renders for Design Systems Series, ep. 6
What's up Dribbble!? Take a look at some of the new 3D work I created for the sixth (and final) episode of InVision's Design Systems: Mastering Design at Scale. This episode is all about keeping your design system healthy and humming along. Let’s get into it.
Like any "living" system, your design system needs some TLC! As such, imagery-wise, I wanted to express the fragility of a design system.
I used the new ‘voronoi fracture effect’ in Cinema 4D R19 to crack and shatter some lettering. To give it a sense of scale, I changed the time scale and lowered the gravity a little. Finally, I added some dynamics (via turbulence) in order to get it to break apart in juuuuust the right way.
Next up, I wanted to create a more abstract visualization of a design system, something that felt complex and delicate—but also agile and very much alive.
To create the web/mesh object, I started with a single landscape object. I reduced the polygons, animated it with a displacer (using a noise channel), and dropped the whole thing into an atom array (tweaking the circumference of the ‘sticks' and 'nodes' until it felt right). Finally, I played with the noise scale until I was happy with the undulating ‘wave’ motion.
The final movement felt like some kind of geometric eel swimming near the ocean floor. And nothing says “design systems” like weird eels, right?!
Hit the L key (thanks!) and then go take a look at the episode to see it all in context!
