Women’s Day 1.1
Today is International Women’s Day.
We have a few takes of our recent works. So we want to devote those shots to the most influential and inspirational women of history.
Marie Curie, Rosalind Franklin, Rosa Parks, Hedy Lamarr…
How many of these women have you heard of?
Let’s uncover what accomplishments the genius scientists achieved as females.
Hope you will like this historical minute.
So here’re 5 facts about Marie Curie:
1 - She’s one of the most prominent scientists of all time. Marie was the first and only person in history to win two separate Nobel prizes - the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 and the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1911.
2 - She pioneered radiation research and discovered two new elements.
3 - She was also denied membership at the French Academy of Sciences because she was a woman. Throughout her incredible career, she faced an enormous amounts of sexism.
4 - World Health Organization show that over 12 million new cancer cases are diagnosed every year and it is anticipated that this will rise to 22 million by 2030 (more info on that here). So with every year that goes by, Marie’s discoveries take on even greater significance.
5 - Marie Curie fought discrimination, working tremendously hard with great ambition and the work that she has done is changing people’s lives.
The next example of female scientists who have made world-changing discoveries - Rosalind Franklin.
5 facts about Rosalind:
1 - She decided she wanted to become a scientist at 15, and passed the admissions exam for Cambridge University. However, her father, Ellis, a merchant banker, objected to women going to college and refused to pay her tuition. Her aunt and mother finally managed to change his mind, and she enrolled at Cambridge's all-female Newnham College in 1938.
2 - Rosalind Franklin, a brilliant and dedicated scientist best known for the honor denied her: the 1962 Nobel Prize for discovering the structure of DNA. Rosalind worked until the last breath.
3 - Her scholastic achievements were denied by her university for years.
4 - Her research on coal helped the aerospace industry.
5 - She was an advocate for the women's suffrage movement.
