Small Changes, Big Impact
according to National Geographic, (as of 2017) a whopping 91 percent of all plastic is not recycled! “Of the 8.3 billion metric tons that has been produced, 6.3 billion metric tons has become plastic waste. Of that, only nine percent has been recycled. The vast majority — 79 percent — is accumulating in landfills or sloughing off in the natural environment as litter. Meaning: at some point, much of it ends up in the oceans.” (National Geographic)
what can you do to reduce your plastic usage? start with some simple swaps: 💧stop buying water bottles and carry your own. did you know that globally, humans buy a million plastic bottles per minute?! (The Guardian, 2017) ☕️ grabbing a coffee on the go? apparently “less than 1 percent of coffee cups ever end being recycled due to problematic materials in the cups” according to The Independent. about 25 billion single-use coffee cups end up in landfills every year. 😖 (via carryyourcup.org) so bring a small thermos with you — it’s a minor inconvenience to carry around but can make a big difference. my favorites are by Hydroflask and Klean Kanteen!
