We cut, shuffle, rifle, flip, juggle, fling, rotate, twist and toss playing cards. We are performance artists. We are cardists.

I built a distinct, holistic visual system and supported content to educate others about the cardistry subculture. Cardistry is an arcane but growing performance art in which its practitioners, called cardists, share their best moves with an inclusive group of skilled and dedicated youths. They use decks of cards to compose acrobatic arrangements and sequences as a form of self-expression. I spent months researching and engaging with the Cardistry community by contacting cardists on the online World Map of Cardists, going to recommended shops, such as the Misdirection shop in San Francisco, watching interviews, filming people and being involved in Cardistry blogs and youtube videos. Based on my cultural and visual research, I built a design system that reflected the motion and movement of the cards and included different components such as the logotype, typography, color palette and graphics devices.
