Hackster Lock Screen

A few months back, we ran an experiment to see how adding a lock screen would improve signups, and the results were pretty incredible. The result was a 3.5x improvement in user signup rate on Hackster, increasing our signups to about 45,000 user signups per 30 days!

After trying a completely gated site, we increased our individual signups like crazy, but found that it was not a good experience for our business partners who wanted to collaborate with us. So we've decided to switch to a "soft lock", where users without an account see the lock screen, but are able to still navigate the site without signing in. This decision has resulted in a happy medium where our signups have improved, our business partners are happy, and Hackster continues to grow. Check it live at http://hackster.io!
