Future of the Web

In the very near future I believe that the "web" will be less about a site's presentation on a computer screen and more about the overall look and feel across a multitude of mediums and platforms. I know what you're thinking: Responsive design already exists! While it's true that it has been a pretty cool thing to implement and use, responsive design still has a long way to go before it becomes a mainstream component of the web design process.

So, what's stopping it?

The answer is simple: Web designers still do not have a proper tool to use when designing for the web.

Even with the best, industry-standard applications available, there are huge differences in how type and other elements are rendered in a program vs. in a webpage viewed on a computer screen, mobile platform, or tablet. You shouldn't have to memorize or deal with a massive list of inconsistencies just to be able to make a design somewhat similar to its web counterpart. It's a nightmare.

I have no solution to this problem. I have ideas, sketches, but that's it. Until then, I'm going to continue playing around with how to best prepare for the future.

The screenshot is of something I've been messing around with over the weekend. I've decided to design it straight in the web browser (desktop and mobile) to try and see where a tool could best be used to make the process easier.
