Don't have asian gesture

If you have been to Asia, or you are from, you probably know this gesture. It means "no" or "I don't have". It's quite common in Vietnam when you ask a seller for something and s/he shows it and says "no have". 🤓🙃
What's the semantics of this gesture? Does it mean showing a hand so the viewer can see it's empty?
