Geeks for Hire

Geeks for Hire was one of my favourite projects to work on, it was fun, challenging and I had a lot of fun designing this logo / mascot for the company.

Geeks for Hire is a no-nonsense virtual company who strives to create high-end web and mobile applications. The team running the business fuel the operation with passion and excitement, it always appears as if they are ready to take on the world. I knew after sitting with the founders on the first day that the logo had to represent their quirky personalities.

At the time during the design process, the company was expanding and changing direction. It was moving from a simple development company to a complex platform that would invite business owners to virtually work with a larger community of people. The platform was going to host vetted developers and designers and give them an equal chance to receive work online and from anywhere in the world.
I was asked to create a mascot so that the logo could be represented both as an icon and a typographic logo. After a thorough conceptual process and back and forth with the Geeks for Hire team, we finally settled on the simple yet effective face that then became the icon for Geeks for Hire. It was then agreed that at a later stage we would add other mascots to represent different sectors of the business.

I started by wanting to make the 'g' of geeks into a pair of glasses, (which is an iconic feature for geeks). I then went back and forth on the idea of adding eye's and eyebrows but finally settled on the simple and effective symbol of a winking face, which in turn also acts as an 'on' button which represents the technological aspect of the business.

The typographic part of the logo was designed using the typeface Rounded Elegance and to perfect the round shape presented by the glasses, I tweaked the letter 'e' to carry through the perfect circular shape.

The logo is always shown on a white or dark blue background. The background is always a solid colour to put emphasis on the bold, characterful and quirky geek.
