Giroux Daguerreotype

The Giroux Daguerreotype was first produced in 1839, the world's first commercial photographic process, the daguerreotype named after its inventor Jacques Mande Daguerre. Daguerre's revolutionary photographic process was marketed as "free to the world;" however, his agent patented the invention both in England and Wales despite Daguerre's wishes. The Giroux camera sold for 400 franks or around $1,500 USD today. There are around 15 Giroux cameras known to exist today.
