Product Design Spectrum

Day 1 of my 365 daily design challenge.

Describing the function of product design to non-designers within a product organization can be tricky. This effort is further complicated by the number of role designations being used throughout the industry. While some of these titles can be a bit too ambiguous (and let’s be honest - pretentious), many of them were born out of a necessity to define evolving roles as they’ve adapted with the design landscape.

This diagram aims to trim the fat, highlighting the most commonly used designations and their functions across the product building process.

After all, there are still differences between disciplines and whether you’re hiring a design resource or just looking for a better understanding, a well-thought and consistent nomenclature will serve you.
