There are a lot of reasons a user may encounter a 404 error, but none of them should be viewed as “their fault.” Although it’s a fantastic opportunity to be cute, it’s more important to give the user a place to go. Primary navigation needs to be present, but presenting the user with some recent views and the ability to search for content they expected to see add more value to the page.
