Moon Artwork 2 - Rua Marama

The 2nd moon in the series is made from old ceiling battens, cut into squares and re-assembled. The battens came from my Neighbours kitchen renovation, he was throwing them into the skip bin. To get the shaded side of the moon, I used a scraper to remove some of the paint, exposing the golden hues of the timber underneath.

This New Zealand native timber is quite rare these days, the trees (Kauri) are now protected from commercial milling. Most of the old villas in New Zealand are made from this timber, built 100+ years ago when there were massive stands on native forests throughout the country.
