Original iTunes Store concept design explorations (circa 2002)
The original concepts for the iTunes Music Store were built around the idea of making purchasing and downloading music as simple and seamless as possible for the user. I focused on designing a leisurely experience that made it easy for people to find the music they wanted, preview songs before buying them, and quickly download and play their purchases.
One key design decision was to integrate the store directly into iTunes, rather than directing people to a separate website. This was intended to provide a more cohesive and integrated experience. To make the purchasing process painlessly simple, we wanted a one-click buying process that didn't require people to enter billing information every time they wanted to purchase something.
Other design decisions included the layout of the store, the way music was organized and presented, and how people could browse and search for music.
When the iTunes Music Store was launched on April 28, 2003 it was a moment in history for the music industry, helping to drive widespread adoption of the iTunes software and establishing the model for the digital music distribution. This made the way for Apple to launch other services like iBooks, App Store and later on Apple Music.
