iTunes Affiliate Marketing Program (circa 2003)
Design Challenge:
* The main challenge in designing this program was creating a system that would allow third-party labels and independent artists to easily upload and promote their music through the iTunes store, while also providing them with the necessary tools and resources to effectively market and promote their music to a wider audience.
* Additionally, I needed to ensure that the process of uploading and encoding music was as simple and straightforward as possible, in order to reduce the barrier to entry for potential affiliates.
Research:
* To design this new aspect of the program, I researched existing music distribution and promotion platforms used by independent artists and smaller record labels.
* They studied the different methods of encoding, uploading and distributing music and identified the features that made these platforms successful.
Design:
* To address the challenge of allowing third-party labels and independent artists to easily upload and promote their music through the iTunes store, I also designed the Music Store Encoder app, a tool that allowed affiliates to easily encode and upload their music to the store.
* This app allowed for the easy conversion of music files into the required format for the iTunes Store, and made it simple for affiliates to add the necessary metadata and artwork for their music.
* Additionally, they provided affiliates with access to a variety of marketing and promotional tools, such as the ability to create their own landing pages on the iTunes store, and access to customer analytics and sales data. Evaluation:
* This new aspect of the program helped to expand the reach and diversity of the iTunes Music Store, providing a platform for independent artists and smaller record labels to reach a wider audience.
* The Music Store Encoder app was widely adopted by independent artists and smaller labels, making it easy for them to distribute and promote their music through the store. * The provided marketing tools also helped the affiliates to reach their audience, with greater targeting and personalization.
Conclusion:
The addition of a program for record labels and independent artists was a significant move for Apple in the early days of the iTunes Music Store. It helped to expand the diversity of music available on the store, and provided a platform for smaller and independent artists to reach a wider audience. The design of the program and the Music Store Encoder app was centered around providing easy-to-use tools and resources to help affiliates successfully market and promote their music through the iTunes store.
